Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts its International Roadcheck, a three-day initiative where CVSA-certified inspectors target several areas of motor vehicle, carrier, and driver safety.

This year’s CVSA International Roadcheck will be held from May 14-16, and will focus on two areas:

  1. Tractor Protection Systems
  2. Controlled Substance and Alcohol Possession

Outlined below is what to expect during these inspections, along with several considerations and tips for motor carriers and drivers:

Tractor Protection and Anti-Bleed Back Systems

Every commercial motor vehicle with an air brake system for towing a trailer must be equipped with a tractor protection system consisting of a tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve, and anti-bleed back valve. All valves will be properly tested during the International Roadcheck inspection.

During the Tractor Protection System inspection, the inspector will:

  1. Direct the driver to release all brakes by pressing dash valves
  2. Have the driver carefully remove the gladhands and allow air to escape
  3. Ensure the air stops leaking from the supply line with at least 20 psi remaining
  4. Listen and/or feel for any leaking air at the gladhand couplers on the trailer
  5. Request a full-service brake application by the driver
  6. Listen and/or feel for leaks from both air lines

Controlled Substance and Alcohol Possession

Controlled substance and alcohol possession by commercial motor vehicle drivers has been a major concern, after a steady increase in the number of prohibited drivers in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH). This alarming trend poses a threat to all motorists on our roadways.

During the inspection for alcohol possession or controlled substances, the inspector will:

  1. Observe the driver for signs of alcohol or controlled substance use and/or impairment
  2. Examine the cab and trailer for alcohol or controlled substances
  3. Conduct a search in the DACH (for inspections in the U.S.)

Tips for Motor Carriers

Create and enforce clear policies to prevent controlled substance and alcohol possession or use in the workplace.

Regularly check the DACH to ensure your drivers are clear to drive.

Tips for Drivers

Do not possess or use alcohol or other controlled substances during or prior to duty. Remember, you are prohibited from having any detectable presence of alcohol and cannot use alcohol within four hours of coming on duty.
